Year 2 visit to the Botanical Gardens
Year 2 had a fantastic visit recently to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The children were excellent in terms of their behaviour and learning. We were able to visit the Butterfly House, observe plants from all around the world, and even handle some exotic animals. One of the workshop providers commented the following; "We were both really impressed with the knowledge, enthusiasm and behaviour of your groups, and we would love to see you visit us again." Well done Year 2! We are really excited to see how our learning develops further over the final few weeks of this academic year.

Maths Championship Finalists
On Tuesday 20th June, we were extremely proud to announce that we had Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 both successfully represented Blanford Mere at the Maths Final Championships. The teams faced 12 other Schools from the West Midlands at Priory Primary School with extremely challenging mathematical problems. As a treat for their hard work, the children came to school on Thursday in their own clothes and were given some extra golden time as a reward.
Year 3-4 Charlie DW, Eesha, Jonty, Sienna-Rose, Daniel L and Leo T were one of the 12 finalists but unfortunately, they did not make the top 3 on the day but tried really hard with the challenging tasks set!.

Year 5-6 Zach, Xavi, Freya S, Luke J, Harrison G and Mason D were able to successfully defend our title and were actually crowned the champions of this regional competition, beating 11 other schools in the final. What a fantastic achievement! They won:
- Maths Challenge winners medal
- Certificate
- Dudley Building Society £10 account
- Pencil case full of stationary
- A Gareth Metcalfe eBook for the school
- Trophy (to be presented on 19th July)
Congratulations to both teams for representing our school so brilliantly! We are extremely proud of you all and your achievements.

National Smile Month 16th May - 16th June 2023
This year, we have taken part in National Smile Month to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene. National Smile Month 2023 is all about shining a light on the importance of brushing our teeth. Twice daily toothbrushing is the cornerstone to good oral health. It is important because it removes plaque. If the plaque isn’t removed, it continues to build up, feeding on the bits of food left behind and causing tooth decay and gum disease.
Yet despite the benefits of toothbrushing, many of us still do not consider it a priority.
In the UK, around one-in-three people do not brush twice a day while one-in-four regularly skip brushing.
Poor toothbrushing habits are a key factor for two-in-three UK adults having visible plaque, almost one-in-three (31%) suffering from signs of tooth decay, and three-in-four (74%) having had teeth extracted.
By helping others form healthier habits, they can improve their quality of life and have a smile they can be proud of.
Here’s what some of our pupils had to say:
Reception
Chloe - I brush my teeth in the morning and at night to keep them clean.
Archie - We should brush our teeth to keep them healthy and strong. We shouldn't eat loads of sugar.
Year 2BW
Zara – We can drink milk to keep our teeth strong.
Luke – We should brush our teeth every day to keep them clean.
Year 2JC
Georgia - I have learnt about brushing my teeth and keeping them healthy.
Louie - We found out that you should eat healthy snacks and not too much sugar.
Year 3/4MC
Aoife: If you didn’t have any teeth, it would be really hard to talk.
Sam: If we don’t keep our teeth clean, they might fall out and ruin our smile.
Year 3/4JC
Jacob P - We made a poster about our teeth and how to look after them. I now know how to look after my teeth.
Charlie D-W - If we have healthy teeth, we can eat the food we like better. We also learnt that smiling makes you happy and when you're happy, it makes other people happy.
Year 5/6HO
Merryn - National Smile Month has reminded me how to keep my teeth healthy. I should be cleaning my teeth twice a day for two minutes.
Isabella - Looking after your teeth is important because fillings and implants cost way more than just cleaning your teeth properly. A good smile is important.
Year 5/6AR
Jack S - You need to look after your teeth, so they don't fall out. I enjoyed listening to the Demon Dentist story.
Maisie D - I liked it when we had a class discussion about how to look after our teeth. We also coloured the different teeth in and listen to a funny story about a dentist.
Year 5/6MB
Dougie - For National Smile Month, we created a Tweet. Mine was '#lol#smiling is good#lol @happy teeth inc.' I thought it was funny and when you laugh, you smile and show your teeth
RRSA Champions visit to Milking Bank Primary School
On Thursday 22nd June, some of our Rights Respecting Champions went to Milking Bank Primary School for a fun-filled afternoon of learning about children's rights. The children were a pleasure to take and their behaviour was exemplary. We began the session by getting to know one another and then worked in teams to share what we all do in school to promote our rights. Teams then worked together to create games which taught about children's rights. Games included snap, true or false, football, snakes and ladders and pairs. The children had a great time playing their games and particularly enjoyed the squash and biscuits at the end! Thank you, Milking Bank, for hosting. We hope they will visit us in the Autumn term.
