On Tuesday 6th February it was Safer Internet Day – a day marked all over the world to celebrate how amazing the internet is, whilst learning how to ensure we are safe and healthy when using it.

We kicked off the week with an assembly presented by our Digital Leaders.  They did a fantastic job and many children have commented on how much they enjoyed it.

On Tuesday, we had a lunch time ‘Drop In’ surgery where children from across school could come in and use the computers to improve their IT skills and learn more about staying safe online.

Because this week has also been Children’s Mental Health awareness week, some of our lessons have been focusing on how to stay healthy online. We have been looking at balancing screentime and learning that there is such a thing as TOO MUCH screentime!  We have discussed the impact this might have and considered ways we can monitor and reduce our screentime (if necessary) to ensure we look after our mental and physical well-being.

Finally, children have been asked to produce some posters for our lobby area about what they had learned in Safer Internet Week so that they can share their new knowledge with parents, carers and the wider community.

Please remember, if you need any advice or support in respect of Internet Safety (or need help setting up parental controls on devices) then please contact us and we will try to help.

This is what some of our children had to say about Safer Internet Day…

Reception

Eden: You could go to the park instead of always being on your tablet.

Abigail: Tell your mummy if you see something on your tablet.

1JB

Reggie: You can use the internet for videos but you have to talk to your grown up.

Bella-Rose: Never talk to strangers.

1MC

Chloe: You shouldn't go on your tablet too much but turn it off and play outside.

Paige: If something pops up, do not download it.

Noah: Do not talk to strangers online.

2BW

Lilah: Safer Internet Week is all about being safe online and don't tell anyone your passwords.

Grayson: You need to be aware as you can lose a lot of money buying games that don't actually take your money.

3/4DD

Harry: I think that you should have limits on your devices so that you can have a rest to stay healthy.

Francesca: You can block people on the internet so that you can stay safe.  You shouldn't tell people your personal details.

3/4JC

Isabella: Safer Internet Week this week has been about how we need to balance our screentime and make sure we turn our devices off well before we go to sleep as it can affect your sleep and make your brain think it’s actually day time because of something called the blue light effect.

Darcey: We’ve been learning about how to balance our screen time, especially before bed so that we can be really healthy.

3/4MC

Kayla: If you have too much screen time, it can be bad for your eyes. I try not to be on my tablet too long. I enjoy using my tablet when I am on a long journey.

Lucas: We need to be careful not to be looking at screens too much as it could damage your eyes or your brain. I enjoy playing games such as Crossy Road and using online games to help with my learning.

5/6HO

Luca: We learnt how to stay healthy online. It's different to staying safe online because it teaches us to balance our time when using devices and screens.

Maisie D: We made posters to share strategies about how to stay healthy online. We learnt the 20:20:20 rule which is after 20 minutes on a screen, you look at something 20 metres away for 20 seconds.

Evie-Rose: I usually spend 25 minutes on my phone and then I go downstairs and play with my dog for a bit.  Playing with my dog makes me feel peaceful.

Harry D: I sometimes go on my phone then I have a break. It's important to keep your eyes safe and to calm down after playing games.  I also play rugby as it makes me feel happy and it is good fun.  Playing as a part of a team is important.

5/6AR

Lily: I really enjoyed Internet Safety Week, we have been learning how to stay safe online and made posters in Computing.

Lucy: I liked learning about how technology can affect our health and I liked learning about screen time.

5/6MB

Daisy: I liked doing the poster on computers and I loved the 'healthier me' lesson for PSHE.

Alby: I found out that is not healthy for your eyesight if you spend too much time on screens. I enjoyed making a poster about how to stay healthy when using screens.
